Wildlife Wednesday - Pine Marten

The Pine Marten thrives in the majestic mature coniferous and mixed forests of Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific Northwest and extends into the beautiful landscapes of Northern New England, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada. With a high metabolism driving its relentless spirit, this remarkable creature is always on the hunt. Its diet, rich in small mammals like squirrels and rodents, showcases its adaptability as an opportunistic feeder, also embracing birds, fruits, nuts, insects, and carrion. The marten, a fierce predator, demonstrates its strength by taking down larger prey such as snowshoe hares and marmots.

With a slender, graceful body reminiscent of a mink, Pine Martens possess large, round ears, short limbs, and a bushy tail. Their triangular heads feature a sharp nose, embodying their keen nature. Their long, silky fur—from pale yellowish-buff to tawny brown, and even striking black—reflects the beauty of their surroundings. Typically, the lighter hues of their heads contrast with the darker tones of their tails and legs, creating a stunning visual that captures the essence of resilience and adaptability.
